Site Rep. Roles & Responsibuilities
The Site Rep has many roles and responsibilities at his or her respective site. Some of these are stipulated by the Association Bylaws, while some come from the CTA definition of Site Rep responsibilities.
According to the Bylaws, Site Rep duties include acting as a liaison between the Representative Council and Bargaining Unit Members at the site, providing communication and publications to Unit Members, and conducting elections at the site. A Site Rep should also remember that he or she should represent the views of the Unit Members at his or her site (through frequent polls of Unit Members) and not necessarily his or her own point of view.
In addition, a Site Rep is a Worksite Leader, Communicator, Problem Solver, Contract Enforcer, and Union Builder.
*As a Worksite Leader, the Site Rep is the visible representative of the Association at the site, welcoming new teachers, leading discussions of important issues, and recruiting members to serve on Association committees.
*As a Communicator, the Site Rep is interested in the concerns and views of Unit Members, keeps Unit Members "in the loop" on what the Association is doing distributes Association newsletters, flyers, surveys, and information and facilitates site "10 minute meetings" and information sessions at the end of faculty meetings.
*As a Problem Solver/Contract Enforcer, the Site Rep has a working knowledge of the contract and encourages Unit Members to do the same; helps identify workplace problems and work on solving problems at the lowest level possible, without making personal judgements. In addition, the Site Rep forwards contract concerns to Association leadership, and contacts the Association president immediately with serious problems. Site reps also handle grievances at the lowest levels of the grievance process.
*As a Union Leader, the Site Rep recruits new members, provides benefit information to Unit Members, recruits new leaders for the Association, and encourages Unit Members to participate in election campaigns (both for local candidates and propositions) and general Association's activities.
Although, the Site Rep responsibilities may seem daunting, Site Reps working together can easily share responsibilities at the sites. LETA's goal is to provide frequent and comprehensive training for Site Reps, in order to make the job of Site Rep as easy and efficient as possible.
